In order to show you that there are a vast array of uses for MATLAB (and, therefore, that you are not wasting your time by learning this powerful tool), The MathWorks has lists of links and information pertaining to uses of MATLAB that you go beyond this class. These encompass several univeristies and types of applications, including most disciplines of engineering, computer science, mathematics, economics, etc.

The MathWorks Academia Page provides information about the various MathWorks products while also giving tutorials on MATLAB and details on transitioning from academia to industry.

The MathWorks Curriculum Exchange provides links to each discipline of engineering and examples of MATLAB that would fall under that discpline. Go to the curriculum exchange and select a discipline.

The MathWorks has several Newsletters with stories of interest to MATLAB users. Parts of EGR 53 were featured in an August, 2007, article titled, "Introducting Computational Methods to First-Year Students with Diverse Skills and Interests."
